As a Professor of History I can understand why most people dismiss History as boring. It is usually presented as a static jumble of dates, names and events that must be memorized, regurgitated and with luck forgotten. I have often marveled at the ability of students who can tell me how many points their favorite athlete scored in a mid-season game ten years ago or how many horsepower their favorite driver had under the hood five seasons back can’t seem to remember the relationship or the difference between the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution.
Instead of this rigid collection of repetitious minutia, History is a dynamic flow of reality that changes every day. Not only is there more of it every day, thus changed by addition, it is also open to new interpretation and comprehension every day, thus changing by multiplication and division.

While surfing my favorite Muslim propaganda website, Al-Jazeera, I came upon some comments from President Obama's newly appointed chief of NASA. Obama approved female space suit Obama approved male space suit Charles Bolden, in a recent interview with that “news” outlet, said the "foremost" mission he had been given by Obama was "to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering." That got me thinking. I don’t recall hearing about a lot of great Islamic advances in the scientific community. I decided to check it out, to find what our President knows, that I have been missing.

The battles were over and the war won now the hardest task of all: how to secure the rights fought for while providing a government strong enough to endure. The Framers gathered in Philadelphia for the purpose of proposing amendments to the Articles of Confederation. Within days they decided instead to frame a new government launching an experiment in centralized but limited government.

Free speech is only truly free, if it is contentious. It needs to be defended most when it is most indefensible. Regardless how much I may disagree, I do not want to silence others at the expense of liberty. I want to hear from those with whom I differ. Only then can I decide whether they are misinformed, stupid or dangerous and react appropriately. Helen Thomas' comments last month about the Jews and Palestine were inane and reprehensible. They exposed her not as the grand old lady of the White House press corps, but rather as a bigoted journalistic half-wit who despite her age and experience knows nothing about history. But should she lose her job as a result?
