Conservative Thoughts

The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first. --Thomas Jefferson

Tea Party Energy Misdirected E-mail
Conservative Compass Blog

You may have noticed that we did not promote the recent national "Tea Parties" on this site.  I'm sorry, but I just couldn't get on board with that demonstration of taxpayer angst.  Call me cynical, but I just don't believe that the people currently in charge are going to be influenced in the slightest by this gathering of citizen protesters.

I believe that however well intentioned the movement was, it actually ended up exposing legitimate conservative fiscal concerns to sniping from the leftist main stream media and administration officials.  These people are all more than happy to dodge the issues, and instead dismiss, belittle and criticize the people raising the questions.

The problem with these types of events whether Left or Right, is that they invariably bring out the extreme fringes of a party.  The media coverage I saw, used editing and partisan commentary to make rallies appear to be gatherings of wild eyed, radical, racist, anti-American terrorists-in-waiting. However anyone who attended the rallies will tell you, they represented a broad cross section of America.  All ages, races, religions and economic groups were there, presenting a united front against big government and bigger spending.  These people don't hate America.  They love this Country and they are protesting because they want it to be all it can be.  They recognize that plunging our citizens into unimaginable debt can only make us weaker, more dependent upon others and ultimately prevent us from fulfilling the promise America has to offer to all who live here.

Additionally, not wanting to waste this opportunity, the Department of Homeland Security released their warning about domestic extremists perfectly time to cast suspicion upon anyone who dared to raise their voice in protest.

Many liberal pundits and "newspeople" seemed to take particular delight in calling the event "tea bagging parties" which I guess is a reference to some obscure homosexual activity.  Real clever, and real mature.  When they can't effectively debate or defend an issue, they go for the gutter.  Coming from the party of "tolerance", that's just bad taste, or an example of what they will do or say to discredit anyone who opposes them.  How come they know about "tea bagging" anyway?  I sure didn't.

In addition to their sophomoric attempts at humor, the leftist media has missed the point of these events altogether.  These are not protests of our current tax structure.  Though some feel unduly burdened, a recent Gallup poll says that 48% of Americans are fine with their current tax liability.  Let me point out that we are still enjoying the last round of tax cuts initiated by the previous administration.  Rather, the tea parties are warning us of the coming tide of increased taxes if the proposed policies of the Obama administration and Pelosi Congress come to pass.  There isn't enough money in all the wallets, mattresses and bank accounts in this Country to cover the eventual costs of cap and trade, forced green energy, and expanded welfare, healthcare and Government.  When we ultimately find it necessary to print inflated money to cover all the programs, what little cash you have left isn't going to buy you much.

So, again though I understand and support what the tea parties were about, I don't believe they are the best utilization of our limited time (2010 is closer than you think).  As Conservatives, we have got to focus like a lazer beam on throwing the bums out of office, which means we have to find viable candidates to run for those positions.  Once found, we have to support them with the same grassroots intensity that everyone brought to the tea party rallies.  That is the way change is affected in this Country.  We talk of revolution, and though the Government wants to warn of domestic terrorism, we know the real revolution will be carried out calling door to door in our neighborhoods, on the Internet by sites such as ours and ultimately as intended by our Nation's founders, in the voting booth.
