Obamacare is about to be re-animated. This coming week, the President will raise it's lifeless corpse to the ceiling of Blair House, in hopes that a lightning strike to the Republican party can jolt life into this stitched together monster of legislation. In attendance to witness this miracle of modern political madness, will be the Democratic leadership and an undetermined number of invited Republican lawmakers. Any minority members who do attend must keep in mind that this President does not intend to lose any ground in this televised "bi-partisan" confrontation. Advice to Repubs: You better send your best and brightest. The stairway can be... treacherous
It appears as though the President intends to place his plan, a homogenization of the Senate and House bills, on the table and ask the Republicans for a rubber stamp. I don't believe he has any real intention of entertaining any Republican ideas because If so, he would solicit them before the meeting. He has promised to post his plan on the Internet on Monday for all to see. Hopefully the server won't crash, and we can actually see what he has in mind. I believe ultimately the President intends to use this very public opportunity to reinforce the Democrat claim that Republicans are obstructionist. Nothing could be further from the truth. Both President Obama and Senate Leader Harry Reid have said that this Congress has been "one of the most productive in history". Much has been accomplished in bi-partisan fashion. In two particular cases however, Health Insurance Reform and Cap and Trade, the Republicans have dug their heels in, and Progressives in Washington are using those issues as poster children for Conservative intransigence. Paraphrasing Barry Goldwater, G. J. Merits wrote in The Economist: "Obstructionism in defense of liberty is no vice and cooperation in pursuit of tyranny is no virtue". If refusing to turn one sixth of the American economy over to a tangled DC bureaucracy or taxing every American heavily for pointless increases in energy costs is obstructionist, so be it. Conservative Republicans and Democrats alike, and the majority of Americans do not favor such moves, and no amount of claims to the contrary by Liberal media or the White House will change that. Note to the Democratic leadership: You've had a filibuster proof majority in the House and Senate all year. If you couldn't pass any particular legislation, it had nothing to do with the Republicans, but with the fact that it was ill-conceived, widely unpopular and poorly crafted. If you can't get your own party on board, that should tell you something. So on Thursday we will all see President Obamastein attempt to breathe life into a carcass that should have been left buried. A creature with the body of the House and brain of the Senate that if turned loose will wreak havoc on our economy and health care system for decades to come. His able assistant, Senator Reid is poised to force the legislation forward with reconciliation and 51 votes. If they pass this bill against the will of the American people, this Administration and Congress will face the November electorate storming of the Democrat majority...with torches and pitchforks.
